Tangen’s late basket lifts Lady Hornets past Perham
Written by Dave ConzemiusThe Frazee Lady Hornet basketball team picked up its biggest win of the season with a thrilling last-second basket by McKinzie Tangen. The shot lifted the Lady Hornets to a 37-35 victory over Perham Thursday, Feb. 16 in Heart O’Lakes conference action in Frazee.
“I am so proud of the composure that our kids showed tonight not only on the last possession but all game long,” said Dave Conzemius, head coach. “We played much better defense tonight than we did the first time we played them. The kids wanted this one really bad.”
Perham (10-12 overall, 5-6 HOL) won the first meeting earlier this season 65-47 and they had won eight straight games against Frazee (12-11 overall, 5-5 HOL), but the Lady Hornets were ready to turn the tables on the Yellowjackets.
Both teams played outstanding defense in the first half as baskets were tough to come by. Perham scored the last five points of the half to take an 18-13 halftime lead.
The Yellowjackets Becky Stoll nailed a 3-pointer on Perham’s first second-half possession to push the lead to eight points. Frazee responded with an 18-5 run over the next 12 minutes to take a 31-26 lead with about five minutes remaining.
Lexi Karvonen scored five straight points to tie the game for the Yellowjackets which set things up for a frantic finish.
Katie McCorquodale and Alexis Tappe scored on consecutive possessions for the Lady Hornets, only to be answered each time by Perham’s Katrina Moenkedick. Following a turnover by each team, Frazee got the ball with 18.4 seconds left and Tappe found a wide-open Tangen underneath the basket for the go-ahead basket with five seconds left.
Perham had no time-outs left and was able to get a desperation heave from half court that was off the mark.
“I give a lot of credit to our kids for battling on every possession tonight,” Conzemius added. “Perham has been playing some really good basketball lately and to be able to beat them tonight, we feel awfully good about it.”
Alexis Tappe led Frazee with a game-high 14 points and added six rebounds and three steals. Ashley Bachmann had 10 points and three steals and Taylor Tappe played a great floor game with seven points, seven rebounds and four steals.
Frazee returns to action Tuesday when they travel to battle HOL conference co-leader Hawley.

Although the Lady Hornets cooled from the field after the hot start, the Lady Trojans were unable to cut into the lead as Frazee played solid defense from start to finish.

Frazee dominated Breckenridge (7-12 overall, 2-7 HOL) on the glass as the Lady Hornets out-rebounded the Cowgirls 42-21 and Frazee only allowed two offensive rebounds for the game.
“We have not been rebounding all that well lately and tonight we really did a good job of going after the ball,” Conzemius said. “We had almost as many offensive rebounds (15) as Breckenridge did total rebounds.”
