The lakes area snowmobile club, United Lakes and Trails Riders Association (ULTRA), is hosting a Snowball event Saturday, March 13 and everyone is invited.

The event will be held at the Holiday Inn in Detroit Lakes with the social starting at 6 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m., a comedian at 7:45 p.m. and a DJ at 9 p.m. There will also be plenty of prizes.

There are 150 tickets for the event and each ticket costs $100.

About 20 prizes will be given away, including cash and guns.

Further information or tickets can be obtained through club members:

• Mike Nodsle, 847-4917.

• Ryan Weum, 847-2887.

• Jeff Alberts, 847-1241.

• Charlie Chadbourne, 847-6517.

• Dick Schmidt, 846-9333.

Frazee resident and club member Dale Fett explained riders would have minimal trail systems if it weren't for club volunteers who clear the trails.

"The fundraisers are important to the club," Fett said. "All funds go into the trails or making signs for the trails."

Snowmobile club president Mike Nodsle became a member of the club when it started in 1989.

The rural Detroit Lakes resident said the club wasn't the first one in Detroit Lakes.

"There was a club before, but they folded," he recalled. "Snowmobiling went by the wayside in the early 1980s and didn't pick up again until the late 1980s."

The club has weekly rides, but much time is spent making sure the recreational riders have smooth sailing.

"The grooming, removing brush and posting signs are all done on a volunteer basis from club members," he said. "We try to get out in early September and remove as much brush as we can and then after hunting season we start posting signs that tell riders the direction to town or to a lake."

In the spring the riders stay busy removing the signs until the next season.

The club is part of a statewide organization that also lobbies in St. Paul for trail expansion and trail grooming funds.

Nodsle noted while the club members work hard, they play hard, too.

"We have get-togethers all year," he said, noting they have youth safety training clinics in the early part of the riding season, a family ride in January, a vintage run in February, the Snowball event in March and a summer picnic.
