Methodist churches to host Thanksgiving dinner Frazee, Vergas congregations team with Salvation Army for observance
by John W. Dermody
The ecumenical movement is decades old. During that time, churches and religious groups have increasingly come together to help people, no matter their expressed faith or goals.
And what better time than at Thanksgiving? That is the thought of two groups as they welcome residents to a dinner that emphasizes the cooperation of Vergas and Frazee church members.
That spirit will be very real next week as Frazee United Methodist Church, the Salvation Army and the Vergas United Methodist Church join forces to offer a Thanksgiving dinner to all in the area who would like to attend.
The Frazee parish along with members of the Vergas church will be preparing the dinner Thursday, Nov. 26. It is open to the public between the hours of 11 a.m.- 2 p.m.
The meal will be hosted at the church in Frazee at the corner of 2nd Street NW and Birch Avenue.
Frazee Council Chairperson Diane Aho said, "All persons, whether members of area congregations or not, are invited."
The workers from the sister churches are planning for 200 diners. She said anyone without a place to go will be welcome, with a wonderful meal planned Thursday.
In addition, meals will be delivered to shut-ins and rides will be available for persons who need transportation to the church. They are invited to call John Dermody, 334-6466. Persons are asked to leave a name, address and a phone number so return calls can be made.
"This is our gift to the community," Aho explained. It will be the first time the two churches and the Salvation Army have united in such an effort, she noted.
The traditional dinner of turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, cranberries, vegetables, rolls, pie and more will be on the menu. There is no charge for the meal.
It is hoped that persons who don't care to cook, or are alone for the holiday will be able to attend. Singles, couples, and families are invited.
Persons who have a mobility problem are urged to phone the above number and rides will be provided, or meals will be delivered.
The Salvation Army is underwriting the dinner, with all groceries purchased from Goodman's in Vergas or from Frazee Family Foods.
Aho said a Red Kettle will be present in case anyone wants to offer a freewill donation. All proceeds will be given to the Salvation Army.
In addition, the Frazee church will hold a Thanksgiving service the previous evening, Wednesday, Nov. 25. It will begin at 7 p.m. All are welcome.
