Sugar & Spice Craft Fair this Saturday in Frazee
Homemaker club spices up life

• by Barbie Porter

Frazee's Sugar and Spice Homemakers Club will host its 32nd craft fair from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24 at Frazee Elementary.

The fair will include a wide variety of items including baked goods, jewelry, laser woodcut knick knacks, salsa, pottery and rugs to name a few.

There will also be food. Turkey sandwiches, barbecue hamburgers, chips, bars and coffee will be available for lunch.

The club hosts the fair as a fundraiser for local organizations, such as the fire department, first responders or the local scouts.

"We're all givers at heart," club member Ruth Ewanika said.

The homemaker clubs started through the University of Minnesota Extension Service in March of 1960.

The university arranged monthly lessons for the clubs, such as cooking or other practical living lessons.

The university cut back its program, but the Becker County Extension office stepped in to fill the void.

While the transition caused many homemaker clubs to fold, Frazee's remained strong.

In fact, two of the original members, Joan Ketter and Hazel Mickelson, are still avid participants.

Becker County extension manager Linda (Ziegler) Perrine locates lesson plans for the homemakers.

She presents the lesson options, (often on DVD or VHS) to the Homemaker Council, which consists of one person from every homemaker group in Becker County.

The 11-plus council members decide the lessons and discuss what the group can do for community service work throughout the county.

Becker County's Homemakers President Mary Hanibus explained the council meets every two months.

"I enjoy getting the lessons and taking them back to the homemakers," she said, noting recent favorite lessons had to do with eating healthy and using different ingredients.

Those interested in finding out more about homemaker clubs or starting a group, contact Hanibus at 847-8670.
