Letter: Burlington rebuttal from the gravel man

by Joe Stenger, Detroit Lakes

Gravel Man's comments:

Brian Smith seems to make a lot of misleading comments to the residents of Burlington Township. The five road projects on the five-year road plan are projects the township considers that need to be done and are put on the list to accomplish, taking the emergency first, then through roads and heavy traveled roads. The line "We Had No Money" being used by Brian was also made by Brian several times when asked why he didn't have these projects done while he was a supervisor during the years of 1994 through 2000. Even though there was $95,000 in the checking account when he was elected, within two years the township was broke and borrowing money.

Brian's statement that the Gravel Man borrowed funds to the township this year was a lie. I have never borrowed money to them. It is my right to bill the township at a later date which I do with several townships. Brian also doesn't mention that the money that was allocated for what he calls the "pet project" was allocated by the residents of Burlington Township in 2008 and not the supervisors as he makes it sound.

The interesting fact about his statement against the money being spent on engineering and attorney fees is that he also used both those services this year so part of these expenditures are due to his use of these services. The "good old boy" system is no long part of being a supervisor and work has to be done for the residents' best interest so these services are called on by many townships when needed.

I know Dave Green has no personal agenda so he is out there working for the best interest of the people in the township. He has also been available for handling Burlington's road problems. Please be sure to get out and vote for David Green.

Jennifer Beck has done an extremely good job in taking over the clerk duties and she deserves your vote also.
