Seeger takes 15th at Ely sled dog race
Neal Seeger, Detroit Lakes, participated in the Wolf Track Classic Sled Dog Race in Ely recently and took 15th place. It was the last race of the season with 33 teams competing in the 30-mile race.
When the race started it was just below freezing, but temperatures reached near 50 degrees by the end of the race around 2 p.m. A good crowd was on hand for the send-off and volunteers had to shovel snow onto road crossings to get the racers out of Ely.
Traveling the groomed snowmobile trail to the city of Tower, it became apparent very quickly there was little snow left on the trail. The conditions went from dirty snow to ice, mud, gravel, rocks, grass and water holes. The longest stretch of clean snow at one time was about a mile long near Tower.
Seeger's dogs finished in good condition with a run time of 2:45:01 for a 15th place finish, which was up 17 places from last year's race. When a competitor on the trail asked Seeger why they were running the dogs in these conditions he replied, "It's like being in the Army, we didn't always go about things the smartest way, but it's still good training."
"There's a lot of people and businesses up there to thank for all they did to fight back Mother Nature to put on this annual event," concluded Seeger.
