The public is invited to get outdoors and celebrate hiking at a National Trails Day event at Maplewood State Park Saturday, June 7 beginning at 9 a.m.
The North Country Trail Association is partnering with the Friends of Maplewood State Park, Maplewood State Park, and Partnership 4 Health to host a full-day, family-friendly event to celebrate National Trails Day at Maplewood State Park. Although a vehicle permit is required to enter Minnesota state parks ($5/one-day permit or $25/year-round permit), there is no additional charge to participate in the National Trails Day Event.
The event kick off with a welcome and morning refreshments at the Trail Center beginning at 9 a.m. Information on the 4,600-mile North Country National Scenic Trail (NCT), non-profit North Country Trail Association, and Maplewood State Park will be available. At 9:15 a.m. a guided 7.5-mile loop hike will depart the Trail Center following the NCT’s route south and then Park Trails back up to the Trail Center, returning by 1:30 p.m.
Three mini-workshops will be held at 9:30 including an Explore Maplewood photo walk, the health benefits of trails & local trail projects, and Hiking 101 (the latter two are repeated at 11:15 am). Families are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy at the Trail Center from 11:45 a.m.-12:30 p.m. before taking in the guided history hike from the Josh Hanson Memorial Picnic Shelter up to the fantastic Halloway Hill overlook.
At 1:45 p.m. a ribbon cutting ceremony at the Trail Center will officially “open” the 3-mile North Country National Scenic Trail segment through the park. Finally, Luke “Strider” Jordan will give a presentation on his 2013 NCT thru-hike at 2 p.m. inside the Trail Center.
