Mardi Gras is coming to the Frazee and Vergas area, complete with costumes, unique drinks and a four-course dinner one might find in Cajun country.
The Vergas Beautification event starts with a social hour at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 4 at Spanky’s Stone Hearth on Rose Lake.
After catching up with old friends and making new ones, a four-course dinner will be served at 7 p.m.
Attendees are asked to come in a Mardi Gras costume or semi-formal attire, which means no jeans. The best dressed party-goer will receive a special prize, and other prizes will also be handed out.
There are only 80 tickets available for the event, with each ticket costing $40. Tickets can be purchased at the Vergas State Bank, city office or by contacting Carol Sharp at 342-3474.
There will also be a live and silent auction held during the event with all proceeds from ticket sales and the auctions going to Vergas Beautification projects.
The Vergas Beautification group has brought planters to Main Street, and pays for new flowers to be planted each spring. The group has also helped purchase benches, picnic tables and a canopy, which are all located downtown.
Vergas locals Carol Sharp and Faye Courneya are helping organize the big event.
Sharp explained the Mardi Gras event replaces the 12th Night celebration, which had been held the past five or so years.
She noted there is still a Christian connection to the event, as Mardi Gras is French for Fat Tuesday, which refers to the practice of the last night of eating rich, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season, which begins Ash Wednesday.
